Hiya

OK..have abit of a dilemma..i have this 12x12x12 Curved glass nano tank and up to now i was set on going full SPS...now ive seen so awesome LPS ...like Acans,Chalice,Scollys etc and now i like them!!!

What looks best in your opinions LPS or SPS!!!

Thanks

Elliott

Why don't you do both? Keep the sps centrally located and keep LPS around the fringes of the cube? I have a mixed reef. I started out with a couple LPS and a few ricordea then decided to do sps. As I was building up my sps I fell in love with a few aussie LPS (Elegance, favia, and acans). Almost all are still frags but I think my system looks better this way. Just be sure to keep the various corals appropriately spaced away from one another or upstream of LPS stinging tentacles.

If I had to pick one, I'd go with LPS for a tank that small.

A tank that small is much more suited to LPS. They are more tolerant of lower lighting and param swings that you'll have in a tank that small.

I agree with Seapug.. small tanks are a little better for LPS than SPS.

I am moving away from most SPS right now. I have found the variety, activity and "movement" of LPS much more appealing to watch..

you can watch them move with flow, open and close mouth/feeding tentacles, visibly eat.... just more fun!

There are some SPS that are nice to look at as well. LPS are nice, I don't have a small tank so I have a mix of SPS and LPS. Minibow isn't this like the third or fourth thing your changing, does your tank do well with anything?

Very difficult to do SPS in a small tank unless you have it attached to a larger system, sump, huge refugium, etc. Start with cheap LPS IMO and work up to the acans, chalices, and scolys after success with other corals. I would even be wary about putting acans, chalices, and esp expensive scolys in a nano.

I agree with the above posters. If it's standalone, SPS is going to be quite a bit more difficult. I think you'll have better luck w/ LPS.

I actually have SPS in my 24g Nano that I acquired as frags, they are growing and doing pretty good, some of them could do better in the color department such as my Aqua Delight but for the most part all my Monti's and Acro's are doing quite well. I am a stickler for WC's and maintenance. Although, SPS are do-able in smaller tanks they definitely will do better in a larger system with a skimmer and high random flow. I have really gotten the LPS bug as of late and most of the bottom of my tank contains LE favia's and chalices, I do think that when I eventually upgrade it will be a LPS system through and through

Thanks Guys :D

I have made my little system quite hightech...it has a 5 gallon refugium, calcium reactor with PH controller, temperature controller etc so SPS are possible...

At the Mo im in love with LPS..they simply rock:D

Kev has Jerry on his side, so that helps alot! :) I agree that it can be done, but it takes an expert or someone who just meticulously cares for their tank in the right way. Water changes out the wazoo would be one way to go, but slow and regular.

It all depends on how much time an energy youll be putting into it basically. LPS are more forgiving in short, if your not going to do everything very meticulously as roblack said, youll have problems

I need the Power of Jerry to find me a Bazooka Joe! :D

kev I wish I had some kindness to send your way on the bazooka joe, I guess you are going to have to pray for a miracle. :D Elliot
I have a 29 gallon, I have had very little luck with SPS. I have all the important equipment, they are just just very temperamental, and it's really hard to keep a nano stable unless you are going to do religious maintenance.

LOL! Yeah, I need a miracle for the Bazooka Joe and the BGM, a big azz miralce!

No offense to you sps keepers but I find sps kind of boring, they are kind of just colorful rocks to me. I like big fleshy masses that move. I.E. lps, softies, and fish.:D I have one green monti and he is a bore. My 10 inch blue and green open brain is much cooler.
