i picked up a tank just for the LR
it was pretty nasty rock
i had it sitting in freshwater for a few weeks and and it dry out and cleaned it all off

any dangers in putting in a tank now? Coraline die off dangerous?

or is it just plain old dead rock now

I've never dealt with this but I'm sure others have rejuvenated rock from a similar fate. I guess it was worth trying or you wouldn't have bought it. I hear people talk about "cooking" it but don't know what that involves. I bet if you search threads w the words cook or cooking in the thread title you will get some hits.

Here is one I found w very little effort:

Not sure about the consequences of having used FW rather than SW.

Search "muriatic acid" and "lanthnum chloride" and you should find what you need. If there's a lot of crap that was on it, it'll be good to cook it; otherwise, it can add a lot of extra nutrients that we in the reefing world can do without.

I knew there was something out there more agressive than what I found. I don't know why, but it amazes me to think muriatic acid is used for this purpose. I think it's because I've seen it recommended in preparing concrete for paint / epoxy to clean it and they always specify to be careful when using it.

If not for the hobby, I never would have ran into it before. I like how much more knowledge I've obtained from researching SW related things. Definitely be very careful regardless what you use*OP.

Thanks I looked at the muratic acid thing but that makes me nervous
What if you don't rinse it good enought then your screwed when u plop it in your
Tank

Don't be nervous, just take the necessary precautions. If there's stuff left over, it can lead to algae and other issues that are better to deal with upfront.
