Lugol's Solution Dip ?
How do you mix Lugol's for an SPS dip,and how do you dip your SPSs

I would call john but I think it might be around 40 drops per gallon? I do not know the length of time either but 15 or 45 minutes sounds right. like I said better call john he will know for sure.

ted did you get ahold of john? if so post the recommendation here for all to see. I always forget so it would be a nice reference point.

and would mind telling us what it does...what's the purpose of it? One of my many unexplained donations is a bottle of that stuff and I'm not sure what it's for.

edit: Actually I just read up on it and how to use it, but I'd love to hear what you have to say about it. I want my xenia to grow CRAZY and it says that it will help xenia and some other soft corals so I'd love to learn more (this is where you direct me to the chemistry forum isn't it :) ).

Rob, John said to put 40 drops in one gal of tank water, and place the coral in the dip for 10 - 15 min . After dipping he said to discard the solution.

I have a slightly conflicting drop count. As per a NJ reefer member

I've seen it at pharmacy's near the band aids and such.

To dip, use a 5 gallon white bucket if you are going to dip a lot of corals. The white bucket will allow you to see what is going to fall off the rock. Fill it half way with RO water. Set your temp at 78 degrees. Set the PH at 8.2 to 8.4, which is where your tank should be as well. Add about 2 drops of Lugol's per gallon. I also add 3 drops now of Flatworm Exit to the dip. Now place 2 or 3 rock in the bucket and leave it there for 5 minutes. I have stepped my dips up to a full 7 minutes for the past several months with no negative affects at all. After 5 minutes, grab the rock, invert it facing the bottom of the bucket and while still submerged, twist your wrist clockwise and counterclockwise as fast as you can. Do this for 1 full minute if you can. You will begin to see things flying off as well as some debri and sand. Raise the rock out of the water and dunk it face down in the water to finally knock anything off that didn't dislodge from the rock. Place it back into your system and your done.

His comment is for rocks, but I don't see the difference.

It looks like the tissue loss has slowed down, but I don't think it stopped.

grossr this is for sick coral. I have not tried a freshwater or hyposalinity dip on coral. fish yes but not coral. I do not know if it's good for them or not. I am sure iodine is nasty for them also but it is something used for years by others so in my experience it is pretty safe. with rock anything can be done but you are removing life from it doing the things you mentioned. he is trying to save life with the iodine.
