You can useually find them at police auctions, if you keep your eye out for them. You can really get them cheap. They get taken in police raids. The police get them from those "Farmers" out there.
Why don't you just order them directly from the manufacturer Pacific Garden Supply directly? The link I posted even has the article in Adv. Aquarist by Sanjay down near the bottom.
Their first Aquarium trade show was right here in Sacramento at the Western Marine Conference 2006 and they unveiled their new DE fixture. They also have a small version of the LA3, they have the vent tube (A/C) options you can have retro fitted into the hoods and you can even get the tempered glass sheilds from them.
I had 3 LA3 Mini fixtures from a club group buy, and they hooked me up with 3 A/C kits and glass sheids right there at the show. Really great family owned and operated small company. They may be a bit back logged on orders since us aquarium guys found a "legal Reef" we can grow with them, but you won't regret it if you spend the dough on these reflectors. They're absolutely killer.
Gnrlee, I have often wondered how many cops have checked out my tank- because they have seen the glowing lights from my tank? BTW, I need a 3rd reflector..
i've got a question for those running the minis - i thought about getting one after reading sanjays article but they are expensive - heres the set- up, i have a DIY pendent with a PFO parallel reflector and 2 32W pc and a 175W SE iwasaki 14K - i know the pc's aren't really adding much to the overall lighting but i like the dusk/dawn effect and they do reduce the shadow zones created but a single MH bulb. so basically is it worth losing the PC's to get the reflector upgrade? the tank is 22 square by 12 deep.
I'm running the full size version over a 24 x 24 x 12 tank. I have the reflector raised up to about 12". It's running a 400W SE XM 10K and I run a glass top on the tank.
The tests showed this reflector didn't have any hot spots but I have a couple places in this tank that will fry anything I put there. I really need to downgrade this tank to at least 250w and maybe even 175.
