Lunar wrasse

I kept one for about 6 months. One day, out of the blue, he started picking at my Volitan. Over a few days, he picked off many of the lions fins. The Lunar Wrasse found his way back to the LFS.

I was also amazed by its eating. He would eat anything, and used his speed and agility to get as much as he could quickly.

I got the Volitan shortly before the LW, and I also later got a Snowflake Eel. I had to ween both the lion and eel off of live feeders. I would still occasionally feed live fish for the eel as I first got him and tried to help him adjust to my tank. When I put in a couple of live feeders, the lion, the eel, and the LW all went after the feeders. I had seen the LW eat big chunks of shrimp, but not a whole fish. He bit the feeder in half and then ate each half. Somehow he knew those fish were offered as food, but he knew the group of Green Chromis were not.

The LW never acted aggressively toward anyone except the Volitan. The Volitan did recover and regrow his fins over the next number of months. It's too bad it didn't wor out though.

They are very curious fish, and my LW would even take it to the point of testing my patience. They are beautiful, smart, and add character to a tank, but make sure they will get along with everyone.

lunares can be quite nasty, the one i have now isn't too bad because i keep him well fed ,but i had one a long time ago and he was a nasty as a fish could be he ende up being put in a tank with a clown trigger the two of them got along pretty good ,but in a community tank the lunare would pick on all of his tank mates

Depends on the sizes of each, also knowing that eventually you'll have to go much bigger. Mine is over 10" now and he zips across the 210g like its a 55g. Love mine, doesn't (can't) bully anyone else in the tank and is well fed. Good luck

One word:Don't do this;Thallassoma species(i had lunare and kruzingeri in different tanks) are the most sociopathic and problematic members of the fish kingdom........i've lost many fishes in one night including a miniatus grouper and picasso triger that was terrible and i will never tolerate to see this fish even in LFS,may be like undulates you can keep it in tank lonely......But if you ask my opinion don't do this;do not buy this fish even it is temptating..............

I have a 6-7" Lunar Wrasse in my FOWLR 180. He is very aggressive in my opinion. He has already chewed two of the fins off of my juvenile Panther Grouper and is constantly harrasing him. The Panther does nothing but stays in the corner out of the way. I laso bought a Longnose Butterfly at the beginning of last week that was constantly being harrased by the LW. He died on Satudrday. Do not even consider getting in his way when I feed the fish. He is a pig. I am about one step from getting rid of him.

lunar wrasse are one of my favourite fish, but they really are only suitable to be housed with similarily tempered fish - i.e. sohal tang etc......... i.e. other big, fast, nasty, tough fish.

my expereince was similar to above..... basically had to remove him.

I've got a big fat lunare wrasse. He is one of my favorite fish, but is pretty aggresive. However, I have him in a tank with a bunch of tough customers though. He's in with Clown & Huma Triggers, Sohal & Sailfin Tangs, acouple of puffers, & a flagin angel. So he really can't do much to any of those guys, but he still harrasses them from time to time. He swims SOOO fast that he steals food from the other fish and will do the occasional "hit and run" attack.
He's really a great fish and fun to watch, but just be careful who you choose as his tankmates!!!

I have a 8" lunar which I have had for about 3 years now, great active fish, and can be agressive, especially I found when adding anything new to the tank which is same size or smaller, he would harass them for about 2 days then he finally would give up. The only way I could add anything else was if they were much bigger, then I never had any problems. He now gets along with everyone; once they were a few larger fish than him, which pushed him down the ladder of power, he has calmed down, I even added a few damsels in the tank, without any issue last week.
