Lymphocystis

http://forums.saltwaterfish.com/a/lymphocystis

There is a link on this page with a picture of a hippo tang. If I saw the pict I would have thought it was ich and not lymphocystis

I am still new to the hobby and wondering if anyone can confirm this looks like an example of lymphocystis and not ich.

Thanks,

Mike

I can see why you feel that way. I wouldn't be surprised if that fish had both or something else altogether. Lympho seldom appears at so many places on a fish at once; but many of the spots are much too big (raised above the fish) to be ich---some of the spots could easily be ich, though. Ich isn't much bigger than a grain of salt. Hippo tangs seem to attract every disorder on the menu and still survive. Lympho seldom, if ever bothers fish. It could easily have ich, or something else wrong as well. IMO.

It's a better example of lymphocystis than ich, however it's possible both are present. I agree with MrTuskfish as some of the spots appear too large and raised from the skin to be ich. The images on the page with the clownfish and Heniochus acuminatus (Poor man's moorish idol or banner butterflyfish) are better examples and more consistent with lymphocystis.
