hey gang. i purchased a butterfly from a LFS. it was a special request becuase he doesn't like the success rate in getting them to eat.

upon purchasing, i was the stuff on his fins was lymphosis (i'm not sure that's the right spelling) and that it would fall off. i was also informed that it wasn't ich because it was at the edges of the fins and no spots were on the body (which is correct).

the copperband is eating great except with the white stuff on his tail fin. is there any particular treatment i should be doing or will he fight it off on his own?

Good water, low stress and a good diet, will usually help this viral condition clear up on it's own.

Try some frozen black worms. Copperbands need worms in thier diet and they need to eat several times a day. Keep the fish isolated in a quarantine tank. Drop the salinity (NOT SG) to 14ppt. Monitor the pH daily. Soak the foods alternately with Selcon and vitamins. If you can get the fish to eat something with some Beta glucan on it all the better. If the spots start to spread quickly it is probably ich. Lymphocystis lesions are irregular in size and shape. Reduce stress any way possible.

BTW, angels, tangs and butterflys should be limited to people that have already had long-term success with easier species. Maybe you already know that. To quarantine means to isolate as in all alone. You should never quarantine two new fish together unless they are a mated pair. Lymphocystis is not highly contagious, but ich is.
