Lyngbya cyanobacteria

Wanna be a reefkeeper
Hello RC,

Looking for help in this battle with Lyngbya. It looks similar to diatoms but another reefer said it is actually Lyngbya, a form of cyano. It doesn't bubble up like diatoms and it isn't growing on the sandbed like diatoms either.

Below is a short video clip that shows it on the rock work. You'll notice a lot of the Lyngbya floating around because I just scraped it off the entire back wall inside the tank a few minutes before taking the video.

I have a scarus quoyi front and center in the video but notice the Lyngbya growing on the rocks. Suggestions welcomed.

Often a reddish brown, Lyngbya spp. are a type of cyanobacteria. Even though it looks just like hair algae and is filamentous rather than slimy. It dislodges easily from the rock, has no discernible root or mat structure and grows fast. Lyngbya species seem to grow very fast in warmer tanks, and spread quickly once attached to a powerhead, suggesting they can replicate by fragmentation easily. Nevertheless aggressive manual removal over time can be effective.

Manual Removal -Toothbrush off the rock and glass capture floating mass in nets.

Clean Up Crew- Nerites, Ceriths, Chitons, Blue legs and Ragged Sea Hares all eat it as well as others

Tip - For the most part treat it as you would red slime algae type cyano.

I wiped it out years ago using Tech-M while fighting Bryopsis. The Lyngbya died way before the Bryopsis. May be worth a shot but seems like I recall reading that Kent changed up Tech-M and it didn't work on Bryopsis anymore.

Thanks for the info. Let me ask you this... I bought a good about of Fluconazole a while back and never used it. I still have it on hand. Do you think it would work on the Lyngbya like the Tech-M did for you? I realize this is a swag.

My main concern is I have a refugium loaded with cheato and I don't want the Fluconazole to kill the cheato in the process. I seem to recall that Fluconazole won't kill cheato from reading posts about it but I just don't want to make a mistake.
