Lyretail Anthias Question

I recently picked up 5 female lyretails and all are in great shape. Just wondering, 4 seem to school and one hangs on the other side of the tank. The others are not harrassing the solo one, could it be the dominant and starting the change to male?

How is the dorsal fin? if the 3rd spine on the dorsal fin is starting to elongate then it is changing sex.

as long as the fish is eating i would not worry about it, do you see any particular female picking on all the others? That will most likely be yoru male.

I tried an anthias school with 4 to start. I don't think this was enough as now I only have one left. I never saw them beating on one another, but as soon as one would die another would start to go downhill. I now have one left that is doing very well, just not the school I wanted. I have been told that I did not start with enough to establish the school.
It all started with one being sectioned off from the others, even appearing to be healthy, then I started noticing marks from getting picked on, etc., etc. - now there is one.

I have 5 females/1 male and one of the smaller females is the outcast. Sometimes she will school with the rest of them but the majority of the time she is alone on the other side of the tank. She is eating so I am not to worried about her.

As of the rest of my females, I have a larger one that is starting to get an elongated 3rd spine so I might have a power struggle on my hands :(

I have a 280 gal display and want a school of Lyretail Anthias.
How many would you suggest I get to start?

Will a single male change back to female coloration if there are no females present?

Sorry to hijack thread :)

It my understanding that once they change to male they can't change back. :)

They sure do brighten the tank!

With regards to the first question, the one that is going to become a male will likely be a social and dominant fish, not a loner.

8 is a good number of females to start with, if you don't want to have a lot of them then just get one. If the group is too small the aggression won't be divided enough and the lowest ranking female will take all the beatings. It is common in small groups of anthias for them to die one by one until there is only one left.

AFAIK once a female has converted to male there's no going back.

Is it possible to add more Lyretails to a group? I have 5 and would like to add another 5 in a few months.

i think you'd be fine as long as you add 5 at the same time...it should help spread out aggression
