macro algae

Have you checked your sump to make sure nothing is collecting on the bottom of the drain or return side. My levels used to climb if I did not clean those areas.

You mean like detritus?
I do get some, as I do in my display tank, but clean it out periodically.
I try weekly but that doesn't always happen :D

Joseph, what is your nitrate level at now?

My nitrates are around 10 or so. Not too bad, could be lower but still better than before.

Edge,

I have this stuff that recently started to grow on a mushroom rock I bought in January and just this week has started to grow onto another rock. I'm not exactly sure what the name of it is, whether it's a good or bad algae, and there's not much of it, but you're welcome to it if you're interested.

Do you have tangs? Just wondering if they would eat it.
If not, it looks like Fauchea (but there is a Gracilaria that looks similar that mine loved - if it happens to be that, I would gladly take it off your hands.

No, don't have a tang yet, but thinking of getting a couple (1 for each of my tanks) to clear up hair algae problem. Googled Fauchea and that's definitely what it is. Thanks for the ID. Like I said in previous post, I don't have alot of it yet as it just started to grow about a month ago on this 1 small rock and I'm not sure how I'd get it off the rock without distroying the rock, the mushrooms, feather dusters, micro starfish, etc. I wonder if I just pick pieces off with my fingers and put it in my fuge if it would continue to grow?

So you still have detectible levels but your macro has died off too.
You said you expected this to happen though.
What have you read that caused you to expect it?
I would think with nitrate at 10 the macro would still be growing.
Could it be that the prodibio has greatly reduced the phosphate level and that is the limiting factor for macro survival?

On the Fauchea - you can try to remove it with your fingers. It may come back as it can be a pain. On that note, it will most likely grow in your fuge (rubber band it around a rock or it will break off and go back to your tank). I'm trying to get rid of it in the fuge, along with caulerpa - so that gracilaria will have a better chance. Fauchea and caulerpa have both competed out gracilaria to date.

Thanks for the info. I got a tang today, so I pulled the entire shroom rock and set it in my fuge in case the tang decided to make a feast of it and until I have more time to work at it (I have two lil ones and not alot of free time :rolleye1: )
