I am wanting some macros, I have plenty of halmedia, I have some cheato but would like a little more. I would like to have some calupera if anyone has extra.

I have never tried a mangrove anyone have luck growing them? I would like to try that species also.

Three mangroves later and I give up on them. I'll have you a big bag of Cheato.

*** I got out about a quart of cheato for you***

I did good with mangroves in the sump til an idiot killed everything else in my tank and I just started ignoring it til I can get the new one up but when it is up and running I plan to get more, but the best way to get them would be a group buy. As they are cheaper by far if you buy them by the dozen.

thanks LtPiper---anything you are looking for that I could give you something back in trade?

Well there's idea for a group buy! We could do it down the road if we get enough interest! I have not seen any other responses for a group after your message. I would like to have some high quality charcoal. I know what I want but not sure where to get it in quantity!

That would be an interesting idea for a group buy I think... mangroves, mermaids fans or combs... some of the harder to come by macro algae (yes I know mangroves are not macros;).
Being an older reefer I have always been a fan of plants and corals together. I would love to do some trading in plants if anyone is interested. I am sure Barry would let us use a tank at the shop where we could drop off alga. Does anyone have any interesting plants that they are willing to share? I currently have some red grapes, halimeda, some unidentified blue-green algae out of Roger's tank (that he seems to hate) and a chat-like bubble algae that grows like a tough brillo pad. I'm working on some more reds; kelp, finger etc. and would love to get a piece of that bushy looking stuff that grows with that blue sponge in the display tank at Barry's....... I really have no idea what it is... Does anyone have anything weird in the way of plants?

I have a couple that you may be interested in.I recently purchased some algae that floats in sheets. It's texture is like plastic wrap, real strange. It is large pieces with no root. It free floats. My tangs do not care for it, but it is pretty! I have it in a pond basket to contain it from floating all over my tank. I picked up my glass today for my fuge. I can't tell if it is growing in the basket so maybe it will do better if I turn it loose! It looks fake! Like leaves of steamed cabbage

I had that stuff on my intake tube and couldn't get it off! I don't know where it came from, but it clogged my HOB filter pipes. I ended up replacing the tube with another to allow it to grow where it started. I have some left and you are welcome to it! I threw the filter tube in fuge and it is growing.

How well does the red grapes grow for you? I had the green grapes. They seemed to melt or dissentegrate rather quickly. My tangs loved that stuff! I am interested in trying the reds you mentioned --grapes, kelp, finger etc. If you have enough to get me started.

I have plenty halimeda.

A big thanks to LtPiper yesterday for giving me cheato! I drove 164 miles to a swap to come home with a free bag of cheato! What a bargain! Hey Piper, Got any caulerpa my tangs are out! I moved tanks around upgrading in size. Failed to hold back the caulerpa since the fish, rocks and inverts were priority. It was eaten!!!

That cheato and hair is the only algea I seem to be able to grow. The others get eaten or just slowly disappear.

I've always had good luck with macros, I always use iodine regularly. We used to mix up our own but now commercial preps are out and safer, I guess. I always use a coral vitamin supplement and an essential element supplement also. If you are really interested in learning more about raising different macros I would start by:
1. not having fish that will wipe out your starts. (That's the obvious one)
2. Having good "live rock". Something that hasn't been out of water for more than a day or so. We get some really great Florida aquacultered rock in at the shop that has everything on it including live corals.
3. using the afore mentioned additives, especially iodine. This will get me in hot water later but next to kalkwasser I believe iodine and vitamin c are some of the most important additives for a reef, thanks to Albert Thiel and Julian Sprung for that one. I use it very sparingly almost daily.
If your herbivores are in control,(no crazy tangs, angels, urchins, etc.) things will start growing out of the rock, especially Florida or Marshall Isle rock. Years ago we would grow the stuff just to see how weird some of the plants were, and nine times out of ten we could never get them identified.
Anyway plants are good! Grow more plants! Just don't let them spear your elegance corals(eh never mind, we can't keep those now), LPS.

Iodine is also one of the first things to get used up in a reef tank. Especially if you have a good skimmer. And the skimmers nowadays are alot better than the ones we used 17 years ago. About the only trace additive that I really am on the fence about now is stront/moly additives. I have read that they can retard coral growth as they take the place of calcuim in skeletal growth. However I also remember reading that goniopora had an average of about 5 times the strontium in its skeleton than most other corals in the same collected area. But that really has nothing to do with macros... just rambling..... nice partially naked clowns in your avatar I just picked up the real thing this eve at the shop..... nifty little fish

Better be careful with iodine, its good but also dangerous. You forgot nitrates, phosphates and iron, which all are very important for algal growths. If your growing calcifying macros you will also need to keep cal and alk up.

Hmmm Well whatcha offering?

I have a good bit of halmedia if you want some of it! My tangs won't touch it. The calupera is another story. That's why I was looking for it!

Piper, I have the opportunity to pick up an extra mangrove. Do you want me to get an extra for you? I have never grown one but thought I would give it a try!
