macro lens

Unfortunately, the Sigma 105 macro also extends on close focusing. Of the four popular and excellent macros in the 100mm range for Nikons, only the Nikkor 105mm VR doesn't extend. And that lens costs lot more than the other three (Tamron 90, Tokina 100 and Sigma 105).

BTW, you might want to check into the company you list. Resellers.com has only one report on them but that report claims that the company is fraudulant (http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Myrtle_Electronics). ONe report may mean nothing. Ont he other hand....

There are a LOT of really sleazy camera dealers out there. You need to be very careful that you're shopping with a reputable store.

Im using Sigma's 105 fixed focal on my D50.

It is quite a capable lens- not having a zoom seriously limits you, but it hasnt been an issue for me - the optics are supposedly better than w/ a zoom lens. I bought mine from B&H- it shipped promptly and I would definitely recommend them as a company to order from.

overall I am happy with Sigma's optics... this lens seems rather dark to me, so if you like to shoot in low light then I would reconsider..

The only other lens I have is nikon's 18-55mm lens that came stock with the D-50.. i was going to stick with Nikon's lenses... but their pricetags are outta my range atm. Sigma is a great comprise- a professional studio photographer recommended them (and B&H) as a companies- im glad I listened.

Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up on the company. Now about the lens. Seems that from the response it doesn't matter Sigma, Tamron or Tokina, all about the same. Nikon for the higher end (which is out of Santa's price range)

Because of your budget, get the sigma 105mm. I'd trust that over the others any day. Check out Canoga, Adorama, and BHphotovideo anytime as they are really really great. Resellerratings.com isn't as reliable as you may think also, but hey... we need somewhere to go for directions eh? Goodluck on your search buddy.

I love my Nikon 105mm f2.8 Ai-S micro lens and Nikon 60mm AF f2.8 Micro lens... I get both under $600. The 105mm is brand new and the 60mm barely used...

I'm still new to photography, I've done a great deal of research on sigma, nikon, tamron etc... There are a lot of online photo forums where you can read up on each lens, helped me considerably in making my decisions.

Lens are a huge investment, always try and buy the best glass you can afford as there is nothing worse than buying something and then a couple of months later deciding that you should have gotten the "Other" glass.

What you'll find is that each manufacturer has a certain lens that has gotten praise for it's optics vs the competitions same lens. I'd do some online research on each lens and then start comparing. Most retailers will have demo glass, doesn't cost anything to walk into a store and try a lens out.

If your considering the Sigma, go with the 105 EX DG (all new sigma macros are EX) which you can find for around $400 on most of the trusted sites. Most reviews have been positive with respect to the optics, only negative is that it's slow in autofocus, but you should be in manual when doing macro.

Thanks for the responses. I'll check it out a bit further but right now i'm leaning towards the Sigma. The Nikon is out of my price range.
