MacroAlgae ID???

Can someone Please ID this if possible?

I have had this hitchhiker for over 2.5 years, but has recently begun spreading like wildfire, and is litterally taking over my tank.

Any Idas would be appreciated....

It looks like Neomeris. I have heard that the algae does have the capability to spread fast enough to take over a tank as you are describing.

I had the samething awhile back someone told me it was a macroalgae native to florida called spindleweed locally,and required calcium he said you had to remove by hand, it kept coming back even after cooking the rock it was on. i eventually just put the rocks it was on in my sump with no light .

Well, I have so much, that if you want some. I will ship you some rocks with it. This stuff will attach to anything, even snails....

I have a bunch of small rock chunks with it on that I am ready to boil to get rid of, if you want them, pay for shipping an thier yours....

Definitely a Neomeris species, which is called spindleweed by some. This is an alga that uses up a fair amount of calcium and alkalinity from the water. If you can starve it of either, without endangering other tank inhabitants, you may be able to break the outbreak of it in the tank. Harvest by hand and scrub down the rocks.

Alternatively, you can try outcompeting it with another macroalgae. A refugium with Chaetomorpha can do the trick if it well lit. Dont make a massive Neomeris harvest before the Chaetomorpha has had a chance to establish and grow or you may end up with nutrient spikes and other algae (like cyanobacteria, diatoms or dinoflagellates) will take over.
