Macroalgae takes off!

I increased the lighting in my sump (to two 100 watt incandescent bulbs, on 24 hours) as needed for my algal turf scrubber... which is doing quite nicely... but underneath the turf scrubber screen is my refugium containing chaetomorpha and gracilaria macroalgae. I've never seen the macroalgae grow so fast! Which of course continues to help keep N&P levels low. In just a month it's tripled (at least) in size. if anyone needs some of either (tangs and angels like the gracilaria) please let me know.

I have some gracilaria that I picked up at the frag swap. I think it came from your tank as I believe your wife was giving some bags away. I was afraid it would die right away as I didn't have a good place to put it, so I just set it in the back of my frag tank. It has done fantastic. thx

Here's an idea for people with a small tank with no sump or fuge. Years ago, when I had a nanocube, I bought a sponge holder from walmart and put it in the tank with chaeto in it. It stayed in the holder and didn't float around the tank. It grew and I pruned it occasionally. I think it helped with n and p. Heres an old picture for example:

What color temperature are you using for your macro algae? I had two 9" 10k T5's running in my fuge for about a month and the chaeto ball I have reduced to about half of it's original size. I am trying a 6500k & a 4100k to see if perhaps that will help. The 4100k makes the fuge look very yellow and ugly but it's on an opposite photo period so I rarely see it anyway.

I have a 3 gal tank with softies and sexy shrimp. I put chaeto in the tom rapids filter on this tank and am floating the tiny led light I got from Petsmart in the chaeto. Hopefully the chaeto will take off growing.

That is some good looking Cheato Jay!There is more if you need some, let me know if you do.

Here is my fuge with a $25.00 led from Ebay. It is called a Beamworks but it is identical to the Marineland Single Brights. It keeps my nitrates at 0 and phospates under .5. It creates no heat.

On a previous tank of mine, I had a 14K LED over some chaeto in a fuge and it grew like crazy. Seems a lot more blue than most usually use, but it really worked well....ha

Jay I have that same light (yes the actual one you had) over my fuge and it grows like mad.

I have a ton of free chaeto if anyone needs any. I will bring it next time I am down.
