macroalgea

I have a 75 gal. tank with overflow, my sump is a plain old 20 gal. tank with no baffles. My lfs says that I need to put macroalgea in the sump but no sand and also add LR. My question is can I grow the macroalgea in a net like some do mangrove or will this just not work? Or should I just figure out some kind of baffle system?

A cheap and easy solution would be egg crate. you can get a sheet of it at Home depot for like 10 bucks
