MAG 18 noise issue

I am setting up my filtration for a 70 gallon tank. I bought a "magnetic drive 18" to try to creat a 1400 GPH overflow (the distance from pump to the water output point is 4 feet). However, the pump is so noisy!! Is MAG 18 too much for a 70G tank? I guess that a smaller pump (MAG 12 or MAG 8) may be quieter? Anyone has experience with MAG 18 noise problem? How can I improve the noise issue?

I would really appreciate you guys'feeedback. This is my first saltwater tank. I have been been learning a lot from you.

Thanks,

Ed.

Hi,

I had to knock a 2.5 x 6 inch hole in my subfloor, and I stuck my closed loop IWAKI pump in the crawl space. Hope this helps,

Paul

I have a joist supported wood floor, and I have about 30" of space between the support joists (beams) and the ground. So, in order to cut down on the pump noise, I cut out a small opening in the subfloor (plywood) under the tank, and I ran the closed loop pipes through it and to the pump, located on some bricks on the ground. I couldnt find a way to sound insulate the pump, so this was the only option. As time goes on and I remove the tank, I will have to patch the hole, which will be pretty easy ( I think!).

Is the pump inside your sump? It it probably just the vibration of the pump on the glass. My mag 18 is nearly silent.

If you dry the pump off and use some aquarium silicone and put 4 FAT blobs to make "feet" for the pump to rest on, it works like a charm!

Good luck, I hope this helps you.

It could be that there is a little bit of air inside the pump body causing cavitation. How long has the pump been running?

a mag 18 is way overkill for a 7, i would go with something closer to 300 gph, like an ocean runner 2500 or an eheim 1250

In answer to the other question about size of pump to size of tank: If your oceanic has one overflow @ 1", it's only rated at approx 600gph. If you have dual overflows the magdrive 18 would work ok w/a ball valve to turn it down to match the overflow. With just one overflow I would think you have to turn it down so much that the pump will eventually burn out due to not enough water flow thru it.

I have a 75g aga RR with a 1" overflow and a magdrive 9.5 is turned down about 1/3 to match the drain.

IMO, the mag 18 is too much pump for that size tank. You do need 20-30x flow, but that can easily be made up with powerheads. Others with more technical knowledge can chime in if I am wrong.

I only have one return pipe with 3/4''. Looks like MAG18 is too much for me. I might go for another smaller one, and sell this MAG18 in EBAY.

Thanks for all the feedbacks.
