mag 9.5 too much?

keeping a mix of all corals, and a bta that has one side dedicated to it
the stand is about 4 feet high so 5.5 feet tall if thats what your asking.
 
yes thats what i was asking for. the pump looses gph the higher is has to pump water at that height it should be around 6-700 gph. i think it will be fine. i also have a mag 9.5 i didn't like how concentrated the flow was from the pvc so i split the end and put elbows on both ends don't glue those because they won't be out of water so there is no need plus you can move them to where you like. it worked out good for me
 
How big is your sump?? A mag 9.5 is going to push some serious water through your sump. Microbubbles could be an issue.
 
You can also put a ball valve on it to adjust the flow.I use a mag 9.5 with my 10g sump with a filter sock.
 
A mag 9.5 is rated at 950 gph with 1.5 inch pipe. If you use something smaller, like one inch or 3/4, that will choke it down a lot.

The 9.5 at the recomended 1.5" diameter piping and 5 feet head will give you 700 to 750 gph. If you use 1" pipe the head will increase to about 8 feet dropping the flow to about 550 to 600 gph.

I would do more like a mag5 in your shoes because you will just be waisting power. A mag 3 would probably be plenty for you. You only want 3 to 5 times flow of your tank through your sump so you don't really want more than 200 gph going through your sump and I would shoot for around 150 to 160 myself. save that money as the power usage between a 3 and 9 is a huge difference.
 
Whether its a waste of power would depend on what the mag9.5 pulls when it is throttled down to match the flow rate of a Mag5. As you throttle them down with a valve, the energy usage will drop as well. Not sure a Mag3 or a Mag5 can handle the head pressure he has without choking the pump out to the point of very little flow through the sump.

If the mag9.5 needed to be throttled down, it could be used in the future to run reactors with the extra flow capacity of the pump. Its always better to have more pump than you need than not enough pump.
 
Well from my experience with mag pumps they draw the same energy no matter what. I have a mag 12 on my 135 and it is throttled back some and it still pulls the same watts on a killowatt meter as it did wide open.
