Mag Drive 12

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a mag-drive 12 pump--are they quiet or loud? Also, are they reasonably reliable?

Thanks

That is what I am currently using in a sump under the canopy, and it is very audible. I would say slightly less than the sound your refridgerator makes. It is however very durable; accidentaly ran dry a couple of times and it still keeps working flawlessly.

I guess I have one of the quiet ones. It's been running for just over 10 months without a hitch.

They make more noise when run wide open. A restrictive flow setup reduces flow, but does make them quieter.

iv'e had mine run externally for 15 months. for the first 3-4 it was like having a buzz saw in the house it seemed like. now if i turn off teverything in the tank i can barely hear it on.

They are pretty much the most reliable pump you can get. They arnt the quietest ones but put a small sheet of styrofoam (unless you use it submerged) under it.

I've used one for my koi pond now for 3+ years. It gets mud, crumbled leaves, dirty water, runs dry sometimes, constricted intake, 5-6' of head height... and it just keeps on going.

Have 2 one runs a return on one tank while the other does a closed loop . Can't hear either one over the skimmers

They are good until the dreaded "pump wont start after power failure" occurs.

The pump is three or four years old, what can you expect.

I was gong to say must be old and never cleaned ;) A new impellor may be your fix.

Mine have run for over 2 years no maintance.
