mag float

sorry for the newbie-ish question..... I just was thinking out loud.. how long does a mag float usually last?

Has anyone ever "worn one out" Mine still seems fine and it is probably 7 years old.. I wonder if would be a noticable difference if I was to replace it. I don't want to throw away money though.

I just replaced one that was a little over 3 years old. The bristles were worn down and some of the felt had come off. It made a huge difference IMO. Much more effective and easier to use.

After a few years, mine got kinda worn down, so I just stripped off the plastic nibs and replaced them with velcro. works like a charm and cost about .03

My Mag float is one of those things that makes me say "Now why didn't I think of that?" They are so handy. I've had two for about a year and they seem to work good as new.

Not to hijack the thread but Aqueon gets my "Marketing spin of the year award" for their magnetic algae scraper that sinks into the substrate. The packaging now says "Won't float away!"

Get an old clean t-shirt, rip off a peice and cover the part that goes inside the tank with it, then wrap a few strong rubber bands around it to keep it attached. Will last FOREVER and works better than the bristles.

I cut a thin kitchen scrubbing pad to the size of the float and stick it on the wet side. Leave an extra 1/2" on one long side to be the lead edge through the corners. It can easily be removed and rinsed/replaced.
