They will scratch an acrylic tank if you get a grain of sand caught between the mag float and the wall of your tank. Otherwise, they work great for removing algae before it starts building up on the walls of your tank.
They work great but i would reccomend storing it out side the tank when not using it. For how it works it simple on the outside part it is soft so it just slides but on the inside in is rough and get the algae off. And if you are moving it and it comes off it floats up instead of sinking so you dont have to get your arm wet to retrieve it. And no they do not scratch the tank in less you get some sand in between the mag-float and the glass. If you do store it in the tank baby snails like to hangout there and they can scratch up your tank pretty bad so you just need to make sure there is nothing in between the mag-float and the glass. And they make special ones for acrylic.
If sand gets between the glass and cleaner it will scratch the glass. I use to leave my cleaner attached to the side glass on my aquarium. My wife decided to clean the glass one day and hit the sand bed accidently and sand got between the cleaner. I now have 3 or 4 large scratches going across my front glass. Needless to say, i now remove my cleaner when done and store it out of sight.
