mag pump question

there not supposed to, they are a external rated pump, but my new mag 7 will has a slow leak where the impellar housing meets the body. I have reset the o ring a half dozen times and made sure the connection was clean.. but it still leaks. I would recommend you get a external only style pump if thats what you want. genX, sequence, little giant..... all make good pumps.

read the mag instructions. i seem to recall that mine was recommended for submerged use only.

btw, the impeller finally siezed on my ancient mag9. this may be on the order of 5-6+ years old. it was a good hoss, except sometimes I had to raise it out of the water to get it to start(or blow air bubbles into the intake)

I have a couple mags. They work fine external but on occasion I have had the leaking problem. Make sure you set the rings right.

Also don't try and tighten stuff too tight. It is plastic after all. I have broken the impeller housing and had to buy a replacement.

But knowing what I do now I wouldn't have gone with the Mags for external. I also wouldn't go with the Little Giant. The one I have on my skimmer is too loud.

I wouldn't use a mag for external use.

Ditto. While they supposedly can be run externally, and I've even seen one post here where someone was actually doing it, from everything else I've seen or read, you'd be taking a gamble IMO.
