Mag to Eheim

I am about to switch my return pump from a mag 9.5 (which I use as an external) to an Eheim which I will use inside my sump. My question is should I get a 1260 or a 1262. I have just the right amount of flow right now so I wanted to try and get as close to the same as possible. I know that the 1262 is rated closer to the Mag 9.5 but I have been reading that the actual flow out of the Eheims is more than advertised. Anyone have experience with these pumps?

The Ehiems are great pumps. I tried Quiet One and Mag and the Eheim is so much better. Less heat and MUCH quieter. I do think that they pump more than they're actually rated at. I have nothing specific to back that up, just more of a comparison to the other pumps and their ratings. I've only had this 1260 for a few months and I'm selling it and downgrading to a 1250 to slow down my flow through the sump. From what you've said, it sounds like you're better off with the 1260. Hope this helps.

The 1262 will have a lot more flow than a 9.5. A 1260....depends on how the Mag was set up. It will likely be a little less.

Thanks so much for the replies. I guess I could always go with the 1262 and "T" the pvc in the display to spread the flow out a little bit. Currently I have it coming out in just one place. Anyone see any problems with this?

I would guess you will have a 200 - 250 GPH increase with a 1262. Be sure you can handle that much through your overflows and sump. You can put a ball valve on the output to throttle it back if need be.

Only asked about 6 and 7 feet. That's my head.
This was with the return on the output. About 3/4".
He said upping to 1" return line would not increase flow.
3/4" in 3/4" out.
I'm as surprised as you guys, but that's what Ernesto Cedeno at Eheim Tech Support said.
The MarineDepot flow chart was way off the one on the Eheim box. That's why I asked.

I just installed a 1262 and replaced a Mag as well. I will tell you that I believe that Eheim under reports the pumps capacity. THe 1262 will outperform the Mag 9.5 on many levels. As you mentioned, I had to T off the main return to calm things down in the sump. It was convient for me as I used the extra output to feed a chiller.

I would suggest the 1260 unless you have an additional purpose for the excess flow.

Again, a great pump!!

Great info everyone. I knew I could count on you guys. I ordered a 1260 today. I will let you know how it compares to my Mag 9.5 in my setup when I get everything up and running.

I just set up a 1262 for my sump and calcualted the flow, I got 460 gph, which is ok, I thought it'd be a little more though. I have 3/4" PVC tubing, T'd off, about 5' from pump to the 2 returns in the tank.

So far it's worked fine, it's not too noisy but I don't have much to compare it to. The water flowing into sump is noisier than the pump for sure.

Just an update. I installed my new Eheim 1260 today. To my delight it seems to perform almost exactly like my Mag 9.5. Seems to have almost exactly the same flow. I have about 4.5 feet of head. I was using my Mag as an external and now have the Eheim inside my sump (which was my whole goal to begin with). It seems to give out almost no heat. The Mag was just way too hot for me to run it internaly. Very happy camper with the 1260. Thanks again for everyone's input.

Glad it worked out for you. Its been posted many times, but people have a hard time believing it. The Eheims are underrated and the Mags are overrated flow wise. The Eheim pumps hold up their flow against head pressure, but the mags do not. This is why a "600 GPH" Eheim has similar actual flow to a "950 GPH" Mag.

Well I am here to tell everyone from my own experience that you are exactly correct. My Mag was running perfectly too. I keep my pumps very clean. Even though the Mag is rated 950 gph and the Eheim is rated 635 gph, their flow in my situation is almost exaclty the same. In fact I would even say the Eheim delivers just a bit more if anything. Now if it will just last as long and be as reliable as my Mag has been over the years, I will be completely satisfied.
