Magnesium issues

Since I have never had low mag before I felt I was having to dose a lot. All of my tanks combined equal about 250g. I guess I thought a pound of mag would do more then it did.

It's weird that you have to dose that much. I do dose about 10z of mixed Mg every month on a 100g tank. My Mg level is around 1380-1420. Something in your tank depletes Mg level. I guess it is a plant/macro algae.

HMMM i really thought it was the other way. To get your alk to stay up you needed mag. God I am so confused LOL. All I know is they are both coming up and thats all I am worried about right now

I don't know the exact order of the way things work I just recall they work together. I am old and forgetful and out of practice.

The Alk is affected by the pH. Did something change your pH enough to cause a drop in your Alk? If something was using up your Alk it would probably be using up you CA too. So, I think that something dropped your pH which caused your Alk to drop which affected your Mag.

I have to admit I dont check PH. I will tonight. High C02??? this could be it I guess. My wife wont let me open a window to save my life. She is afraid of bugs. Its a new very well insulated relatively big house 3800 square foot living. The doors are open for very short times a couple times a day and thats it. I could run a line out the window to get fresh air for the skimmer. I have heard lots of reefers doing this to keep there ph up. Interesting. I had 2 of these tanks at my shop until 2 months ago when I brought them home. I never had Mag issues there. I will have to check this tonight and report back

Just take a bowl of water outside with an air pump. If it changes drastically you might have a problem but that is a big house.

There is a great deal of gas exchange at the surface of the water. The O2 and the CO2 can take care of themselves as long as there is adequate water surface circulation. Also, a protein skimmer produces a huge amount of O2 mixture with the water. Did something else affect your pH?

I tested for ph last night on all 4 tanks and ph was between 7.9 and 8.1 on all 4 tanks so thats not it. I didnt have time to test the other parameters but I will tonight. I did 10 to 15% water changes with red sea coral pro last night on all 4 tanks
