Maiden's hair algae TOXIC?

WWCC

In Memoriam
I read on liveaquaria.com that maidens hair algae has a toxin in it to deter predators. I would like to in the future use it in a 20 gal long along w/ a mini reef for a perch and hiding for (a) seahorse(s) and pipefish. Is it safe to have other hwerbivorous fish in the tank with it?

I can't speak for the toxicity of Maiden's hair, but the herbivores we normally see wouldn't be very good tankmates for seahorses and pipes. I think you'll find that most will advise a species-specific tank for them.

I bought a nice rock full of maidens hair. I had 2 yellow tangs and over time they munched it all. I believe the toxin just makes it not taste as good to tangs. I never really gave the tangs much algae to eat so I think they ate what was present. Too bad its very attractive algae.

Most algae, including caulerpa, contain substances to discourage critters from eating it. Many terrestrial plants do as well. It's not always successful though. It may be just enough of a deterrent to cause grazers to move on to other areas and not sit in one spot and wipe out the whole population. I've never heard of a fish getting ill from eating algae of any kind.

Yes, I've never heard of that either. I think they say some things on there to watch their own a$$. Looks beautiful, but I can't believe what they want for small patches of it around here!
