maintenance costs per month (electric)

I know it will vary from tank to tank... But im a little worried about my 400display/700 system..
it has 3 400W MH, a .5 horsepower pump and 2 mp240's for flow... Give or take, it shouldn't b more than 200$ a month or?

(just a little worried because someone said i'd be paying 6-700 which is just ridiculous for me..

spoke to someone with a similar setup and they said around 300$ there are many variables, hoping around 200:beer:

Long Island, NY it just might be 700. I was running pretty much the same equipment but 3-250 MH's and a few more pumps for the frag system ect and I think my bill was running about 200 more. I played around with my lighting times and got the MH's cut back to 6 hours a day and VHO's 8 hours a day and saved about 30 a month just cutting those back from 7 MH and 9 VHO's. Good luck with your new tank.

cool, thanx man, meaning 200 added to your original build? damn, well its done now.. i'll def play around a bit

I just moved back to LI after living in South Carolina for 5 years and I am not looking forward to the huge LIPA bills. Electricity was 1/2 per kilowatt hour of what LIPA charges!

If I set up the 365 gal tank here I was actually considering using 1 400 watt hailde in the center and only growing coral there. I am really crazy about my fish so only having an island of corals will be fine for me.

Also I will not be using vho, actinics or anything else on a full time basis.

I will be using Koralia Magnums for flow which are low in energy consumption.

So those are my ideas for keeping electric costs down. There is no way I would pay $200 a month to run a tank.

ya its nuts.. People on manhattan reefs are telling me 600 at least.. i really hope not.. i could live w 200... which is still absurd but maybe in the future i can switch to LEDS or something.
i'll def have to frag and sell to at least absorb some costs!:mixed:

Look into whether or not the price fluxuates during the day vs night and early morning for power in your area.

I run about 1100w in lights, a barracuda pump, 2 vortech, 3 koralia nano, some computer fans, 8000 btu window ac during the summer for about 6 hrs, powerhead and heater almost every day in the water mixing tub, the apex and some other equipment (skimmers, reactors).
Before to move the tanks in this house I was paying around $60. Now I'm about $130 max per month. Average about $100. Considering that wife is home in maternity leave (tv 24/7) and that we have a newborn (air dryer to calm him down sometimes!) it is not too bad. Lucky to live in Oregon

I ran 3 400w MHs and a chiller on my 375 and hit $400 a month during the summer. Now I am running LEDs and it is starting to go down each month.

there is a calculator on this site that you can use, just plug in the number & you will get a good idea of what you will be paying.

If your bills are that much get more efficient pumps. I purchased a Red Dragon 12m3 which should give me 2000-2200 gph at 6ft head & 100-130w. I am trying to keep my 475g FO under $40 a month

wow, ive plugged in about 2200 watts of worth of electricity here on the reefcentral electric estimater and my estimate was about 65 bux a month. Even when i was running my 250 with 800 watts of t5s 750 watts of heaters and tunzes, vortechs, a skimmer and misc pumps my bill was only like 35 bux a month extra. Guess parma ohio is the place to be to run a big tank with high power demands.

Recently I visited Costco and found this equipment that called my attention. It is used to measure electricity consumption, a Kill-A-Watt. With this equipment the consumption of any equipment can be measured. The interesting thing is that not only it measures consumption but gives the cost of operating the equipment per hour, day, month and year. It cost me $40.

The first step was to connect it to the power outlet. For this I used an extension so that the equipment can be moved. Once connected it gives you your house voltage, which fluctuated near 120 volts.

The next step was to enter the cost of the kilowatt. In Puerto Rico where I live is around 19¢ a lot higher than in continental US.

I started connecting each equipment and obtaining the annual cost to operate. For those that are on 24 hours was easy. The ones that are connected for some hours then a calculation was made.

In the case of chiller it is more difficult since it is on and of several times to the day.

These were the results of the cost of annual electricity cost of each one of the equipment in my tank:

Power heads Koralia #1 - $9,98 x2 = $19.96
Power head Koralia #2 - $18.30
Little Giant 4MDQ-SC 810 GPH pump - $144.00
Aquaclear 402 PHS sump (backup UPS) - $14.97
Power head Maxijet behind rock - $20,80 x2 = $41.60
Sicce pump skimmer SWC Xtreme 200 - $39.94
Pump calcium reactor Ecoplus - $38.28
Metal halide 2 175w (8 hours) - $213.00
2 VHO 160w (10 hours) - $157.00
Fans - $31,62 x2 = $63.24
Spiral light mangroves 26w/100w 5K Satco - $39.94
Light Chaeto ecosmart 75w - $28.29
Chiller Current the USA Tower 1/4hp - considered on 10% of the time (considering that are 4 months that do not start) - $44.90
Several miscellaneous things were not considered like the Co2 selenoid, moonlights, etc.

The total annual cost of my tank is $863.42 and with miscellaneous around $875.00. That is equivalent to monthly $73 or $2.40 daily.

Interesting

that is really cool, i may look into getting that to play around with.. so 2 more weeks after paint is done the tank will b here!

I dont know what the difference in ammount cost wise your electricity is there but I have my 220 with 3 250 mh with 3 pumps total on it, my 92 corner with one pump and skimmer pump and 150 mh, the red sea with a custom sump, a 20k gallon koi pond with waterfall and fountain running off a mag 36 and a hot tub running with 2 50 in tvs with thearter systems allways running and my total bill for the month is low 400s. We just use a ton of power but im also maine NH border not NY so maybe it runs more there.
