As many of you may have seen or read, Matson has taken responsibility for a molasses spill in Honolulu Harbor on Monday, September 9 that was due to a faulty pipe used in molasses loading operations at the company's terminal at Sand Island. The pipe has been sealed, the leak has stopped and the molasses operation has been halted. Unfortunately, the incident has resulted in the loss of many fish in the harbor and continues to be a problem. Matson truly regrets what has happened and shares the public's concern for Hawaii's natural wildlife and the environment.

Matson is working with Hazard Evaluation Emergency Response (HEER) from the Department of Health (DOH) to ensure all appropriate measures are taken. In addition, Matson is working with DOH's Clean Water Branch, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DNLR) and Hawaii DOT Harbors Division.

While molasses is a sugar product that will dissipate on its own, it has been a slow process this week. At a news conference yesterday, Hawaii Department of Health Deputy Director Gary Gill stated that officials believe letting currents flush out and dilute the molasses may be the best option.

We want our customers to know that we take this matter very seriously. We want you to know that:

"¢ Matson is concerned about the impact of the spill to the environment and the safety of our community.
"¢ We are cooperating and working with Dept. of Health and supporting agencies including DLNR, DOT-H, US Fish and Wildlife and NOAA "¢ Since the report of the leak, our priority was to locate the source of the leak and put a temporary patch on it to prevent any further leaks.
"¢ A permanent fix is in progress to address the damaged pipe.
"¢ We have discontinued any further molasses operation on our terminal until a full review is done and we are confident that there are no further leaks in the system.
"¢ We are participating in daily operations meetings with DOH and all supporting agencies to provide all needed resources.
"¢ We have sent divers into the water to monitor the effect of molasses and are taking aerial shots to monitor the movement of the molasses.
"¢ We are bringing in additional environmental experts to help provide more resources to help support the response efforts.

We also want to note that while this has been a very serious incident, it has not resulted in any disruption to our service or our Sand Island operation.

Matson takes its role as an environmental steward very seriously and has a strong record of leadership in the maritime industry on a number of fronts. We are taking steps to ensure this situation does not happen again. We have a long history in Honolulu Harbor and can assure all involved that this is a rare incident in our longstanding Sand Island operation.
