Hello everyone, I've been out of the hobby since early 2008...as they say life got in the way, but I'm actually looking to get back into it in the nano world (my previous tanks started as a 20g High, and then a 55g reef tank)
I want to put a little nano tank together for my young son. I've been doing a bunch of research the past few days, re-familiarizing myself with the hobby, and have a few questions for you all.
What are some of the better sites to buy online these days. Back when I was in the hobby I had used drfostersandsmith.com, liveaquaria.com, reeftopia.com. Are those still some of the better places to purchase from, or are there better companies? What about some of the best LFS's around here. Or how about local members for Live Rock/Live Sand.
Now as for what i'm looking to do. I want to create a softy tank (no sps) with some inverts, and fish, zoos, shrooms, and maybe some green start polyps, etc.
I figure about 10-20bs of live sand (are those premade sand/salt water bag solutions any good to get a tank going--like what you see them using on 'Tanked') 10-20lbs live rock, cleaner crew, and then a few fish.
I will be putting a tank together that is a fully enclosed system to start. I'm looking at the JBJ 12, or the Coralife 14 Biocube. From the reading I"ve done it seems like more people are leaning towards liking the Biocube more.
For those of you that have around a 14gallon tank and DO NOT have sps, are you using filtered water through an ro/di system. Hooking up one of those systems is currently not a possibility for me. I would more or less have to use tap water...will this just make algae blooms like crazy, or for a softy tank will this be okay? Do any of you guys use our Long Island/Nassau County water?
Apologies for some of the newbie-ish questions, but trying to remember all that I used to know.
As mentioned, I've never run a nano before. With either setup that I'll be using (JBJ or Coralife) I will be keeping it bone stock for awhile. I would be removing the bioballs from either setup, and obviously adding a heater (I don't believe either of them come with heaters), the stock pump will also be staying put for the time being.
Any help will be much appreciated!
Thanks!
