making a stand using black acrylic as the finish...

i was looking for a sleek black modern look and i think black acrylic will give me what im looking for with very minimal effort.

im going to build the inside frame out of 2x4's, how can i attach the sheets of acrylic to the wood? just something like liquid nails?

i would also like to make a hood out of this too, is there anyway i can attach hinges to acrlic to make doors for the hood and stand?

also, i would like to make the hood entirely out of acylic, but im going to do a retro kit MH and T5's, how can i attach these to the acrylic?

For the stand I would say its ok. For the canopy, the lights will be way too hot for the acrylic and it would end up warping horribly bad.

I would go with an epoxy over plywood if you are trying to get that sleek black look. You can search audio forums (home or car) for a piano finish. They use it on subwoofer boxes and tower speakers, it has a simular look to a gelcoat and you can get it with cans of spray paint and a little work.

im not sure what your talking about, epoxy over plywood?

im going to be using black acrylic.

what is different from that and the stuff your talking about?

He's talking about using the epoxy in place of the acrylic as it wouldn't be prone to warping like the acrylic would. I would suggest black glass if I were going to make a stand or the epoxy suggested. In the long run I think glass would be a better bet since it won't scratch.

are there any hinges out there that attach to acrylic somehow? id like doors on the bottom and the top.

the bottom is going to have a wood frame, so i could probably find hinges that are big enough that they will reach to the wood.

but the hood, id prefer not to have to build it out of wood. but i would like access to the FRONT of the tank, NOT the top. so how could i rig up doors on the front of the hood?

sliders of any kind? id prefer something on a hinge.

those will work perfect thanks!

how i just need to figure out how to mount a retro kit MH and T5's to the top portion of the acrylic???
