Making a standpipe taller

Just a quick question. If the splashing noise in an overflow box is a bit loud, the way to reduce that is by lessening the distance the water has to fall. So in my marineland reef ready 90g, the stock standpipe that came with the tank is a bit shorter than I'd like it to be and the splashing is quite loud. What I thought I'd do is simply cut the standpipe and reassemble it with a coupling, which would add a little height. Is this logic sound? Or am I missing something?

Should work fine. Is it a Durso, or just a straight pipe? If it's just a straight pipe you can simply put a coupling at the top.

I did this in reverse when I set up my bean overflow - I measured wrong for one of the drain pipes a cut it so it ended at the water line instead of 1" under. Just added the coupling at the bottom and fixed it in 2 secs.
