Making an overflow, need some advice.

Im making my own overflow and I was going to paint it black and then glue it to the inside of the tank. Is there a special reef safe paint that I need to use for this or will any spray paint work?

Also, I am making it out of glass but I am not cutting notches in the top of it, I am just going to let the water overflow thetop of the overflow and spill into it. Has anyone done this before? I always see the overflows with the notches cut out in the top of it.

Almost any enamel-based or plastic-based paint will work. I would suggest either Krylon Fusion (specifically designed to adhere to plastics) or Rust-Oleum's plastic-adhering paint. The reason for using these is that they are both plastic-based and therefore become "reef safe" after curing. They are also convenient to apply as they're a spray paint (compared to trying to brush on enamel-based paint)

Then notches aren't necessary at all. They're simply there to prevent your animals from going over the side and into the overflow. You can replace the function of the notches with a piece of eggcrate or plastic mesh (such as Gutterguard) cut to fit.
