Making salt for hyposalinity qt tanks @ 1.009

Anyone know how much salt to add to 5 gals of RO water that brings it to approx 1.009? Just thought I'd ask before I sit there and do 1 teaspoon at a time!! I'm sure someone has had to do a water change on their QT tanks! Thanks!

I don't know the answer, but I will be needing to find out. I plan to make up some regular salinity saltwater for my main tank change, then dilute some down for my quarantine tank change. It may involve quite some time (or calculations) to work it out, but I think it will be easier.

For 5 gals of RO/DI it took me about 8-9 oz (by weight) of Instant Ocean to get .009

IIRC, I think 9 oz pushed me a bit over and I had to add a cup or two of RO to bring it down, so maybe try 8oz, measure and then add a tablespoon or so from there.

I just guessed, then check. If it is too high, I add some water into another 5g bucket, and then mix the two together until it's at 1.009. Also, I hope your not making a QT tank full of new water, I'd add some water from your display and RO/DI freshwater as well, so it isn't that big of a shock. That way you don't need a whole lot of 1.009 water.

I've found that when using Reef Crystals, it's half the normal amount of salt per 5 gallons (1 cup instead of 2). Gives me .009 every time. Can't help you on other brands....
