making your own food

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

just woundering if anyone else has thought or done this?
taking the meat counter seafood mix and it up in a blender then freezing it.
the one i saw was at Henrys and was shrimp, scallop, squid, octopus, and fake crab(basically fish). and was at a really good price.$3.99/lb.

yep i do it, my mix is pretty basic (shrimp, mysis, bbs, nori, Vitamin C tablets, flake, pellets, selcon, garlic) but i plan that on the next batch i make i vary it a bit. And i use gelatin to keep them in cubes rather than just freeze the liquid.

eric borneman suggests doing this for corals. he has a good 2 page recipe in his book on corals.

most of us do this to a certain extent with feeding our fish too, at least i do. variety is a good thing, a must have.

as far as garlic do you use the whole fresh garlic or something else?

i use garlic extreme from kent marine, but others use fresh just ground up real fine. i will switch as soon as i run out of the kent stuff. its $15 a bottle.

i was planning on putting it into bags and lay them flat so i can break some off when needed... wife wouldnt like the fact of a seafood slop in the fridge

that will work. i was just talking about the garlic. take the garlic and blend it with water and then add all of your other ingredients and just chop them with the blender. then bag, like you said, then make your wife a milkshake in the blender without washing, she'll love it.

I put the garlic through mincer and add it to the food. I drop little blobs onto a cookie sheet, chuck it in the freezer until it's solid and then put it in a ziploc. I only have to make food maybe 2x/year.

Our local club ( RASOC) did this a couple weeks ago, we used shrimp w/shell, clams, squid, selcon, nori, scallops, garlic, flake, pellets, and a bunch of other things. I forget the whole recipe, but we blended it in a blender (NEVER USE THIS BLENDER OTHER THAN FOR FISH FOOD AGAIN ) It was really potent stuff. I still have almost all of it left, a little goes a very long way and the fish LOVE it. you can also go to our club forums at www.rasoc.org if you want the exact recipe. HTH
