Makings of an Oregon Tort

Are there distinguishing features that separate an "Oregon Blue Tort" from a "regular blue tort"?

Just curious, cuz I know with some corals like the Oregon Mummy Eye definitely can be differentiated from the Original Mummy Eye.

I have a large colony that was sold to me as Oregon Tort, so it just got me thinking. Regardless, it's an amazing coral/colony, but it just got the wheels turning.

I bought an Oregon Tort.....and Its not an oregon tort at all.

The distinguishing features are that it is a real deep blue with solid blue growth tips....as in the growth tips don't get lighter....

well you came to the right place :)

be better if you could show us a pic then some of the experts could advise you better...

When I hear Blue tort, I think of the Cali tort in that there appears to be some green sheen/coloration to the skin of it. Oregon tort is dark blue, no green to it.

Was it expensive, hard to find, and advertised as the slowest growing coral in the world? In the 7-8 months that I've owned it there is encrusting growth on the rock, a tiny bit of growth in the main branch, and a very tiny new branch has begun with probably 1/4" of growth. Very slow growing coral but just an incredible, beautiful blue.

Going to get a pic up as soon as water clears up tomorrow from water change a few minutes ago.

It's definitely dark blue with no "green sheen" to it. It has blue growth tips, but they are lighter than the branches of the coral, with blue polyps.

I got it cheap by any acro colony standard with this kind of color. Bought it from a fellow reefer, who was afraid of not being able to care for it and wanting to get more LPS, instead of the few SPS she owned.

Pic to follow soon!

Thanks for all the input thus far.

hope this helps

Great link.

Mine definitely is all blue, and has no green in it at all.

Pics will be up tonight, to hopefully find out for sure what I have.

.

If the growth tips are lighter than the branches my guess is that it's not an oregon tort. That is how I figured out mine was not an oregon tort.....even though the seller told me it was and I PAID for it.

But you never know....lets see the pics

Here's a cell phone pic. Charging up real camera, but thought we could start with this. Obviously, the tips aren't white, that's just light reflecting. The tips looks like the ones that didn't get overexposed by the cell phone. Better pic, hopefully, to follow soon. Colony is a much darker blue too. I am fighting an alk problem too from my Ca reactor going haywire, so I don't know if maybe some of the tips are lightened up from alk burn at the same time.

That's a Cali tort or some other "tort". You can see the neon green inside the growth tips. Its a nice coral but not a true Oregon tort.

The Cali and others will be purple a lot of the time where the Oregon is always blue.

Here's a colony of the original OT. Unfortunatly I lost this during my upgrade. This colony was very picky unlike the one sold by ORA. I hope to regrow one this big again. To give you an idea this colony was over 6 years old.

Thanks. I think it does have a purple hue to it. Good to know what it is for sure. Regardless, I think I got a good price on the colony and it looks beautiful in my tank. In the end, that's all that matters!
