male cardinal killed the female

Rather ticked off when I viewed the tank this morning. Found that the male cardinal had killed the female. They had bred a few times with the male holding but never to term. Noticed they were getting interested again, but there appeared to be ALOT of aggression from the male.

Figured they would straighten it out as they always did, but the death of the female was the result. Never expected this to say the least. Has anyone experienced this before? Thanks in advance

I've had a pair in my tank for over 4 years and have had a dozen or more successful spawnings. This week, one of the bangaiis is gone and the remaining is missing an eye. I have no idea what happened.

I didn't know this could happen unfortunately. He'll be a loner,because I don't think I'm going to attempt a pair again. Really thought I'd get a successful spawn in time. Thanks for your input.
