Mandarin Dragonet and Clown Fish

So they have to be a mated pair? That applies to clown fish too right?

Kind of...most of the time when people buy clowns they are unsex...if no female is present it will become a female and the others will be males. If the female dies one male will become the female. A female can never become a male. This is why it's easy to pair up clownfish.

For example take banggai cardinals...I have no clue how to tell between a male and a female, most people will buy 3 and hope 2 will pair up and remove the 3rd before it gets killed.

With the firefish, for my tank I just grabbed two out of a group at the store that were the same size and they have been side by side since.

I have seen some pretty big clownfish, but probably not full grown. This tank may only be up for a year or two any ways as we would have more space to upgrade to like a 29g or something after. Has anyone actually kept a clownfish in captivity for 15 years?

Many fish can live for quite a long time.

People lose fish after a year or two and think it was old age... when in reality the more common causes are improper nutrition and other forms of stress. Stress that can almost always be avoided.
