Mandarin food

Should I be able to see the pods a mandarin eats with the naked eye. I see almost pin point guys clinging to my tank glass. I'm just wondering if I've got a large enough population for one. I've got a refugium and tank has been fish less for about 3 weeks. Advice?

yes, many will be visible...
you can try using a red light after your tank lights go off and look for or "count pods."
a mandy needs a crazy amount of pods to thrive...I think around 100-150 an hour, all day long...

Also, how big the tank, and how big the refugium? A Mandarin needs a good sized tank with a refugium to allow pods to thrive. 3 weeks isn't enough time for your pod population to establish itself. I know companies sell pods but it gets pricey considering, like humaguy said, they eat a lot, all the time.

You should see the white specs on your glass, and therefore you can know they are on your rock.

Regardless of the amount of pods you have, get yourself a magnifying glass and a red lens flashlight and look at night an hr after lights out. It should look like a free for all. Then, supplment with different foods, and at feeding time, turn your pumps off, put food in the same place each time and use your magnifying glass to watch what the mandy eats. Picking does not mean chewing and swallowing. Picking isnt eating. Keep trying other foods until you find a few it actually chews and swallows. Also keep buying and supplementing pods. They wont eat the large ones. If you have enough of those they can keep making the babies mandy eats. I got mine to eat frozen by making what I call fish soup. A mix of arctipods, rods food, brine shrimp, spirulina brine, caviar, and a couple pellets. I purposely overfeed because of her. Do frequent water changes, and make sure it has NO competition for food.

If youre diligent you can make it happen. If not, it will die.
