mandarin male or female ?

Did you post a picture? For what I understand, it has to do with their top fin. If there is a spike, it's a male. If no spike it's a female. If you post a photo, which clearly shows it's top fin, you'll probably get your answer. HTH

That is definitely a male. 55 is pretty small for two mandarins. Is you first one eating prepared foods? Otherwise, they will have a hard time finding enough food in a tank that size.

i've had 2 in a 40g system (30g + 10g sump) for 17months now.
both happy and very well cared for.

however mandarins should be kept in 3's to prevent fighting. sometimes even a mated pair will fight from time to time.

so far i've been very lucky, but both were purchased at a very young age.

2 in a 55, possible, just not practicle :)

I will be upgrading to a 120 in a few months and wanted to introduce the new one and old one at the same time in the new tank
mine will eat brine shrimp but so far thats all
I've tried some frozen mysis and formula one pellets
but not a chance
I've had this one for over 2 1/2 years
