I have a pair of young mandarins (about one year old). They have been spawning regularily for some months, and I want to breed them. I have everything ready, all I need is the eggs. And there's the problem: To be able to find any eggs, I need to turn off overflow and any circulation in the surface. I do this as soon as I see my mandarins dance, somewhere between an hour or half an hour before the lights go off. I don't know if this is what disturbs them, but something obviously does. For they can dance beautifully, and be so interested in each other. But, when the lights go off, they just stop what they are doing there and then. Mostly it's the male that loses interest. The last week, the female has been very ready for spawning, and she has continued to stay close to the surface, waiting for the male, after the lights go off. But the male just doesn't show up. He just disappears, and is nowhere to be seen until next day. This has gone on for a few weeks now, and I am getting frustrated and annoyed. I so want those eggs. And I know they can, as I've seen the female go from very fat to a lot more slim during the night (before I started waiting for the eggs, of course - it doesn't happen now). What on earth are they doing? What can I do to make them continue, even when the lights are off? I know they can, but either they don't like that I turn off the overflow and circulation, or they don't like me watching them, or there's something else that's disturbing them. What's going on?
