Was at fellow hobbyists place this evening and his mandarin was eating both pellet and frozen and I thought how lucky he was. Is this going to sustain this fish long term? Thanks

Not necessarily. Remember that the metabolism of this fish requires feeding multiple times per day; additionally mandarins don't compete well for food so other fish may prohibit that fish getting appropriate quantities of nutrition.
