Mangrove question

Hi guys,

Long time reader first time poster.

i am creating a mini-biotope, slowly. i have a 10 gal aquarium that i have mangrove pods that i found on the beach. they are starting to sprout roots but that is it. i have a power head on to circulate the water and i ocasionally will turn on my protien skimmer to cut down on the crud growing. I have about a 2-3 inch sand bed.

the lighting i am using is a t5 daylight bulb and a lowes cheapo fixture.

my question is what can i use to feed the pods? i don't wanna use miracle grow or anything that will kill any invertabrates that i plane to add down the road.

thanks for your help!

Mark

It is not necessary to feed the pods, they will feed themselves. Amphipods are omnivoracious. They will eat anything. In general, they are herbivores and eat micro algae and biofilm.

i'm sorry, I didn't mean the copapods (sp), I meant the mangrove seeds. I want to fertilize them but I don't want to do anything that might harm any invertabrates. I want to make sure that my mangroves are well established before I start adding any livestock.

thanks

In the Keys they actually build bird stands over newly planted mangroves. Birds poop in the water...mangroves are happy. Fish poop would do the same.
If you just get your tank running, you'll help provide what the mangroves need. I actually have some in a pot with a bit of sand and gravel on my front porch...haven't touched them and their growing well (6months now).

that makes sense, thanks!

the aquarium has only been set up about a month. not sure what my water parameters are. any type of animal/invertebrate you can think of that I could put in now?

As a Long time reader first time poster where do we go from here? Hint:"not sure what my water parameters are"

Unless it me...this not a fish or a reef tank? it more of a potted plant type thing going on?

Hydroponics might be more of the forum you looking for?

I think it might be me......SOmetimes I do not pay attention to what forum new posts pop up on. Wish I could filter the "get new post" to not include forums that I have no interest in. Like the lounge and the individual reef clubs, vendor forums and such should be able to opt out on. I have subscribed to forums but that does nothing as far as I can tell...... Good luck on your mangroves.

not a hydroponic tank.

i'm wanting a mini biotope.

not really interested in fish, more the mangrove forest with invertebrates. would copepods, snails, crabs.....maybe a really hardy fish......live in a non-cycled tank?
