I found a mangrove seed at the beach, took it home and I have it in a mini refugium, just some brillo pad algae, that has no sand. Does it need the sand? It's been there for two weeks now, and the roots started growing. thanx for your help...
The roots are capable of nutrient uptake directly from the water so no sand is necessary. Howver it is more natural for it to grow in a substrate and would probably benefit from and be more healthy in the long run if it was planted in some sand.
Here's a link to a thread with good discussion about mangroves and also contains some excellent links for more info from the experts.
