Manits reef safe?

Its really hit n miss as well. My mantis won't touch hermits or corals at all, but will eat any and all snails. Just be prepared to lose any livestock u put in there with it.

Im not really worried about snails and hermits...just the corals.

Figure they need some live prey every once in a while to keep their appendages strong and healthy.

I have had no problems keeping a G.Chiragra (one of the more aggressive species of "clubbers") in a nano reef tank. Of coarse I would not add much of a cleanup crew unless your intent is for them to do short work and they are considered food items. Other than that I think your safe with softies but with hard corols I would use some discretion as they could potentially be considered ideal construction sights for a new mantis hole, of coarse with spearers you dont need to worry about this aspect, but do of coarse (with spearers) worry about your fish.
Just my experience.

In less than two weeks mine has taken out three astreas, two large turbos, 5 hermits, and that is on top of being fed mysis, clam and silverside!!

The algae is already showing and that is probably the worst thing she has done to hurt the reef - oh, and she seems to have no qualms about trampling on the xenia... bull in a china shop seems to be a fitting analogy...

The biggest problem mine has presented my corals is probably the dustcloud it created when making its extensive burrow facility under the LR. This has slowed down considerably these days, but anything sensitive to a lot of debris in the water column probably won't like a burrowing mantis too much. The softies I have on my LR (xenia, zoos, shrooms, gsp) are hardy enough to handle it and are doing fine. If there are any sandbed corals small enough however they will get buried or moved, it buried a gsp frag I was going to sell almost to the point where I couldn't tell where it was.

no nothing

no nothing

I see a few folks have had luck with corals and mantis....not me. Ben is as was previouslly stated.."like a bull in a china shop". He just runs over everything and the corals start to shut down and they do not open fully. I recentlly lost several plate corals to an overzealous black clown....not going to let that happen with my mantis....he gets a rock and nothing but sand....:) Steve:dance:
