Mantis Availible...

I decided that two is one too many for my 38 Gal tank, they aren't getting along (the big one keeps kicking the small one out of its home), so I caught the smaller one today, and it needs a new home-

I have it in my QT tank at the moment-

I would PREFER someone near tampa picking up, But I will ship if you are willing to pay postage and for packaging. If he is shipped, it needs to happen within one or two days, and I will only send USPS next day. I will do my best to pack him up right, BUT I can't offer any garuntees as to his condition on arrival... This is out of my hands.

E-Mail me at AGott26909@aol.com to claim him.

Or she that is. I hope I'm not being trendy either. Seems lots of people are getting these, including me.

As a side note: SDM, has phil come out of hiding yet? Mine did so a few days ago and seems back to his old self or better (he even took out a cerith!). I hope all is well with him, and much health to you and your's.

The Mrs. Headed off to her new home today... Hopefully the trip goes well.

Apparently, the divorce went pretty well... The Mr. Is back at his home improvement projects, he was busily clicking away all morning at his rock. Judging from the pile of debris outside it, he has quite a castle in there. Good thing the Mrs. didnt take her 1/2...

Hooray:D

The Mrs. Made it to Wyoming safe and sound... Hopefully she will still grace us with her presence on the board. I wonder what she is going to think about winter??

The Mr. Has taken well to the bachelor life. Spent the day enlarging his lair, yet again. It is funny to watch- You hear a series of clicks, like a jackhammer, then a puff of stone particles shoots out of the entrance.... Every so often, he comes out and 'rearanges' the pile of debris outside. When he is done working for the day, he retreats to the hole and covers it with a shell...

So far, the ocelaris clowns in there are doing well, too... Although they seem kinda confused about the clicking. I would imagine it is pretty loud in there, I can hear him from several rooms away.

This is, by far, the best animal I have ever kept in an aquarium- So fascinating. To think that I was going to get rid of him...

Yes, the Mrs made it safely, thanks to the great packing job of Andgott.

Once acclimated, she immediately started poking her head in and out of the holes in the rocks and crawling in and out of every nook and cranny possible. then she turned around and looked at me as if she was saying, "is this my new home". When i got home from work it was obvious that she had already been quite busy revamping things to her liking. She has been somewhat shy so far, but i think she is still getting used to her new home. I can't wait to go home and see how she is doing.

On a side note, i asked several LFS's in the area if they could special order a mantis shrimp for me... they couldn't understand and kept asking "Why would you want a mantis shrimp?"... I just told them they don't know what they are missing...

When i talk about her i almost feel like a proud pappa. She is so smart, sociable etc. Mantis are definitely one of the most fascinating creatures around. Hopefully pics coming soon of the Mrs. in her new abode.

That's the same story I get from both LFSs here in Greenville, except they just told me "you don't want a manits". I just don't get it, I even offered to pre-pay for the Mantis.

I've been on the waiting list at saltwaterfish.com and liveaquaria.com for quite a while now with no luck.

It's a amazing...Yje following conversation took place nearly verbatim at a LFS here in San Francisco...

Me: Do you have Mantis Shrimp?

The owner (wholooked at me like I was crazy), No, don't worry, our rock is free of Mantis Shrimp.

Me: No, I mean, can I get one through you...

Him: (Now looking like I had just asked if he had herpes) No.

Me:Well, can I buy any of them that you remove from the Live Rock? Any 'nuisance crabs' as well? What do you do with them?

Him:We flush them...

Me:Well, can I buy them, I'll pay for them.

Him:Nobody wants them, we flush them.

Me: I just said that I'll pay for them.

Him: Turns away and continues cleaning some tank. He has sneered at me the two times that I have returned to his store, but I need to go there for this and that for my G. Viridis, as the only other LFS close by is called 'Fish Purgatory' by the other locals, due to the horrific death/disease rate of the stock. The place where I picked up my Mantis is across the Bay in Berkeley, not a quick jaunt.

On a positive note, I did talk to a guy (who says that he is on these boards as well) in San Jose who can order them, including P. Cilata. I want at least one spearer for my Hotel, so that is great news.

Did you like that box :D... Bet you werent expecting a 3' square package for such a small animal. You should have seen the guy at the post office when I told him that there was a shrimp in there (he didn't know what a Stomatopod was)... His reply- One shrimp? Ooook... I didnt want to risk it, though, with the temp changes... Thought it was better to OVERPACK than under...

Yeah, people have such a bad opinion of the little critters- I was the same way- When I put that TBS liverock in the tank and heard the clicks, my heart dropped... But, then, I researched them, and found out just how fascinating they were- I know I keep saying it, but I have 5 tanks, and the mantis is BY FAR the most interesting animal that I have, and SO easy to care for. People just dont know what they are missing.

I am glad that she is doing well, I kind of miss her :)

Both my mantises were quite sociable, the Mrs. was a little more timid, but she was really coming around... I am glad she likes her new pad in Wyoming...

Yeah, i am sure the post office guy was pretty surprised. She was doing just great when i got her acclimated and put in the new tank.
Mrs. Bojangles is doing wonderfully. She is already roaming all over the rock and sand. when i walk by she stops what she is doing, looks over at me as if analyzing what i am doing (maybe bringing her some shrimp), and then goes back about her business. I have seen her carrying lots of rubble around and into what i think is her main burrow. You were right, she sure loves shrimp.
I have a handful of hermits and a collection of snails in the tank... i haven't seen her attack any of them, but she may have. I have been feeding her a small chunk of shrimp every day because i want her to be comfortable with me and not hide when i am around; and the last few days she has been out exploring a lot, which is great. I can tell that she knows she is Queen of the Cube. I am excited when i come home for lunch, and get home in the evenings to check out what she has been up to.
Watching her in the cube is so much fun, that my poor reef tank has been somewhat neglected.
Now that she is exploring, i will try and get some pics of the Mrs. running around.
