Mantis/clownfish??

I have seen it. Certainly a larger spearer can! I've also seen footage online of a peacock eating a clownfish.

note the keyword "can." it really depends entirely on the individaul mantis. for example, mattyice has a peacock that would destroy ANYTHING that entered it's tank. almost cut a hawk in half i believe. on the other hand there are peacocks that are practically hippies. i believe Ms. K had a SW molly with her peacock.

I have been robustly succesful in keeping large aggressive clowns like a cinnamon and an allardi, with a large 5-6" peacock for four a couple years...

Im planning on adding a small clown at the same time as my mantis(N Wennarae) when my tank cycles so I will let you know how it works out. A guy that my dad knows breed Ocellaris and he said hed give me one for free so there not much of a risk in trying it.

Hmm yea thinking i wouldn't be very impressed if my smithii got a hold of my clown i have had for a year plus.

Dont put the clown in at the same time. I would make my rock work TIGHT. Making him a cave (Entrance & exit) no bigger than 3-4" round. Let your mantis settle in and get used to feeding it first. When his home is established, ask yourself, "Would a clown get currious, and wonder in there?". Of the answer is yes, then SMASH.... one injured or dead Clown fish.

Yea he is not going to be in my tank i know he wouldn't go near him as he hardly wanders far from the Duncan's he host in but i still wouldn't risk the little dude.

Yeah there's still a risk that you're killing a clown.

Sorry if I offended you but I wouldnt attempt it if others have n't been able to keep a clown/mantis together. Even if the mantis does kill it I dont see where its any different than feeding larger fish feeder fish. Stuff like this happens every day in their natural environment not to mentiion in hundreds of thousands of aquariums daily.

I have a maroon clow in with my peacock and they have been best friends. Only time there is a issue is feed time, whem the mantis thinks that Moe is taking all the food he will chase it just for a moment untill the clown darts into one of its large anemones. Many times the clown will be within antena reach of the mantis and he pays it no mind. This is in a 24g aquapod

Anyone who risks the health of an Ocellaris by putting it with a mantis has a warped view.

Ocellaris sleep on the sand bed, and probably wouldn't last one night.

It sounds cruel to me.

I put a tomato clown in with my O. havanensis and they are doing just fine. It has been a week now and the clown respects the mantis enough to get out of his way so it seems to work :D.

On another note... I put a couple damsels with my P. Ciliata and bless em, they didnt make it through the night. But he is a spearer so..

It doesn't make sense think that its cruel for 2 animals to have a predator prey relationship. While the setting may be smaller, and therefore not as in favor of the fish as in the wild, it is not any crueler than feeding them frozen shrimp or freeze dried krill. Just because its a clownfish doesn't put it above natural order. And just because your a person doesn't put you above natural order either. I think that people put too much importance on the "pretty" that they forget it isn't all rainbows and sunshine. Animals kill animals, allowing animals to live.

And while i'm ranting there are no "higher" species. Humans aren't superior to inverts. The supioror one is the one that doesn't go extinct. Besides mantids are mostly diurnal and wouldn't normally be out when the clown is sleeping.

Dan

Sorry for the rant.

Many keepers keep fish in with their smashing mantis with no issues what so ever. The most common fish for this is the damsel becaue of their quickness, they stay in the water column if not hosting to an anemone, and they are pretty. Clowns are just glorified Damsels.

Crule isn't puting a fish you expect should be fine in the tank with a mantis.
