Mantis died

Well I think my RBTA killed it. I've had it forever and thought putting the anemone in there would be ok.

Your RBTA killed a mantis in a 75 gallon reef? Wow. I wish I would get that lucky with my RBTA... Oh.... And sorry for your loss.

As an aside, how did the RBTA come in contact with the mantis for long enough to kill it? They seem to have very hard shells, and move very fast? Did it wander in at night (do you have moon lights?). I have a clown in my tank and it doesn't let anything come near the RBTA.

No, I put the anemone in the 40gal mantis tank! I suspect that the mantis probably tried to whack it. He was laying just in front of it. I knew he was a nosey thing, just thought he was smarter. If I come across another mantis he will get his own tank, I'll know better.

What kind was he? If he was a small one, it's probably because the anemones tentacles stick to things and he didn't get away fast enough- otherwise, it mighta been somethin else.

Oh yeah he was a small guy. He was a N. Oerstedii. He sure was a lot of fun!

aaaaaawwww.....reminds me of Phil! Yes, It probably was the evil RBTA that did him in. Their tentacles sting, stick, and if I'm not mistaken, pull in anything they catch. Depending on it's size, he probably couldn't get away from it once he got "hit" by it. I once saw a guy at the fish store getting a RBTA out of a tank for someone and it was hanging from his finger with just 4 tentacles. Sorry about your mantis....

I can't believe a bta killed a mantis, no offense. I have had peppermints and cleaner shrimp literally walk all over a bta. I would look for another culprit if you were that interested in finding out.

Oh none taken. There's nothing else in the tank tho. He's been in the tank for 2 years, and the tank has been set up for about 2 1/2. I used it strictly for recycle water for hatching brine. I know they only live about 5 years, but it sure seemed suspicious that within 2 days he dies.
