Well, at this point we know that it is in the family Gonodactylidae, but until you get a better picture, that is about all I can say. Can you see what color the meral spots are?
From what i can tell, they are green and pink? At least the clubs are that color. I'll check later tonight to see what color the meral spots are. I'm just worried that he/she might out grow the tank. Right now its in a 2.5aga bowfront. Still small at like 3 inches. I had a chance to get a great picture while i was feeding, but the camera took too long to load. Any idea on how big they will get? Thanks Roy for the quick responses.
Given the possible species that it could be, it isn't going to get much larger anytime soon, if at all. At this size, most gonodactylids don't grow more than 5-10 mm a year. Absolute maximum size will be 8 cm or so.
the meral spots look green, but im not sure if im even looking at it correctlly. So im going to ask. Where are the meral spots just so that i know that im looking at the right place. I looked at the spots abouve the smashers before it goes into the body. If possible could anyone post a pic showing where the meral spots are?
If you take a look at Oxinyourbox's latest thread, the picture of the Neogonodactylus oerstedii clearly shows the meral spots (http://www.repositorical.com/Aquaria/workmantis/). These are the saddle-shaped depressions on the inside of the raptorial appendages - in this case white with a dark purplish spot in the center.
A greenish yellow center to the meral spots would suggest Gonodactylaeus falcatus, a common gonodactylid found from Hawaii to East Africa..
I finally had a chance to get a real good look at the meral spots. They are white. Kinda looks like it has a black outlining around it, but it might has been the lighting.
