My LFS frequently has mantis in (not sure exactly what kind). Im considering setting up a small mantis tank and i seem to remember someone telling me that mantis should only be kept in an acrylic tank because they can actually crack a glass tank the way they kill their prey....

Any truth to this?

also what size would be comfortable for a nice smaller mantis tank? i wanna do this right.

only large 5"+ O. scyllarus (peacocks) can break glass, along with the largest of G. ternatensis and large G. chiragra. Neither G. ternatensis nor G. chiragra has been reported of breaking aquarium glass to my knowledge, and O. scyllarus rarely, almost never does it. MOst mantises would fit well in a 10 gallon except O. scyllarus, which should have a 20 gallon long, or ideally a 30 gallon. If you can get pictures of the mantises meral spots and telson we can id it for you, or check out stomatopod.com for pre-ID'd specimens that are very healthy.
