Mantis Newb

My boyfriend has been whining about getting a mantis for a while now and yesterday got a 20 gallon acrylic tank in trade. He wants to do a nano-reef, lps, leathers and mushrooms in there also. So my question is what mantis are safer with corals? (Secured down of course) Also is there any concerns with too much light, mantis escaping or anything like that? We looked at stomatopod.com and he liked the G. Viridis and N. Wennerae the best but will take whatever I tell him will work in this tank setup.

Obviously it won't be up right away, probably not for a month or two so I'll be doing a lot of reading for now. Oh, also what kind of sand bed is needed, he really wanted black sand but I thought some needed various sizes for burrows?

Mantis are basically "reef safe" with a few caveats. They will inevitably find the most valuable frag in the tank and use it to construct their burrow. Also, G. ternatensis carves its home out of living stony coral, so might want to avoid that one.
