my mantis has been on its back for about a week. my ph took a nose dive a few days before this but its back up now. none of the other inverts were affected. its not hiding in its hole its just laying there fanning its back legs. any body have any clue what might be going on?

I doubt it's dead, any dead in any tank I've ever had has rapidly been reduced to bristle worm/nassarious food in under a minute.

my mantis lies on his back and they prey i put in there go to investigate and then he catches them......just what he does.......is your's on it's back all the time

Mine just started to do the same thing today... But he is laying on his side and inching around the tank slowly, just moving his feet. It apears that he ripped his arms (smashers) off. I am hoping that he is going thru his molting and that he just having trouble getting out of his shell... Its pretty rough to watch this insane mantis shrimp that is fast as lightning to be reduced to this helpless organisim that just lies on its side...

I had just moved the tank yesterday, and not being the brightest forgot to plug the heater back in. But I doubt the temperature dropped below 65, and I assume they should be able to handle that. After all I would imagine the gulf is around that temp now if not cooler.

So I dont know if my mantis is just mid mult... or I some how hurt him in the move. only time will tell I guess

Any update on these mantises that lay on their back or sides? I just got my new mantis into my nano and he has been laying on his side playing dead. I hope he is ok... :(

I had this happen with my first mantis. It hung on for a month or so, and would even eat krill, but eventually died. Turned out it probably suffered a bad molt due to poor water quality. There was nothing that could be done for it. :(
