Mantis Shrimp are so intelligent...

Today while gazing into my reef I noticed that my 2" long (as of yet, unidentified mantis, no cam) had recently decide to move. He made a nice tunnel in a piece of live rock when added to the tank a while back. I found one of the secret entances while moving a frag. I'm just glad he wasn't sitting there when my hand was there. I guess I upset him by allowing the light into his tunnel so he moved out. Well today he was working on his pad. I thought how cute he is using rubble to plug the hole..ok didn't seem that cool..until I watched him go and get a piece of rubble and try to fit in in every way possible to no avail..so he pulls it out and custom fits it by smashing it here and there. I couldn't beleive how well that piece fit. It looks like a brick wall. anyways..mantis' are the jet...thanks

I'm working on my theory that a prehistoric species of giant mantis built the pyramids when the continent was still underwater.

I love watching their constructive activities more than their destructive ones, very cool.

Yep. I am kinda bummed that my mantis is happy with her pad. I might mix it up in there just to see her at work again. The mouth to her main burrow was in an easy to view spot, and I could see her working on it from time to time. She'd bend her googly eyes down and inspect a facet of rock. Give it a few "technical taps" then bend her eyes down to review her handiwork and decide if it needed more work or if she should move on. Neato riffic!

Mine just had a little run in with my CB shrimp.
I'm not sure what transpired between the two, but all I know is that I found my CB walking around looking at his two claws that had been removed. Didn't make it more than a day without them.
Can't wait to find a way to get rid of him.

Dude, I'll ship it and you if you can get the flippen thing out
of my reef!
I'm going to try a mantis trap in a couple of days. Hopefully I'll catch more than my cleaner shrimp.

try this:
put a bait inside and place it near its hole.
